Kona Coffee on International Space Station

I had the opportunity to speak with Fred Robinson of Hula Girl Coffee to learn a little about Kona Instant Coffee and how it ended up on the International Space Station.
History of Coffee in Hawaii
Hawaii is the only State in the United States that you can grow coffee, Puerto Rico also grows coffee but it is still a territory. It has been an up and down ride for coffee production in Hawaii with production rising to almost 18,000,000 pounds at the end of the 1950’s and then dropping to below 4,000,000 pounds in the 1970’s. A resurgence since the 1990’s has restored coffee production to over 9,000,000 lbs. per year from the more than 800 small farms on the Hawaiian Islands.
Markets
Much of the coffee that is grown in Hawaii is sold as fresh ground Kona coffee and is roasted and distributed from many fine roasters in the USA. A large quantiy of Kona coffee is freeze dried and shipped to Asia where instant coffee has a greater predominance to ground coffee. It is one of these freeze dried coffees, Hula Girl Coffee that has made it to the ISS.
Rice University and the ISS
The students of Rice University selected Hulagirl freeze-dried coffee to go into space with their innovative solution to allow astronauts to mix their coffee cream and sugar to taste. Until now astronauts had to choose between one of four ways coffee served black, coffee with lots of cream, coffee with lots of sugar or coffee with lots of cream and sugar. With this innovative solution astronauts can now get their coffee the same way they get it on Earth.
