Coffee Review from Peet's Coffee

When reviewing coffee we try to have the environment as common and unsophisitcated as possible so that we are reviewing the beans and not the coffee maker.  A great coffee maker can make mediocre beans taste excellent. Our beans were roasted on September 10th, 2014 and prepared on September 20th and September 21st. In both cases we ground the beans to a medium fine for our coffee maker. Getting the water to scoops exactly right took a couple of tries for this basket coffee maker and in the end we found that 8 scoops of coffee and 8 cups of water gave us the most desirable flavour.

We reviewed Peet's Guatemala Atitlan Organic and Major Dickason's roasted beans shipped to us in retail packaging.  We were very impressed with the quality of the packaging that we recevied. There were no aroma's escaping from the bags which is an indication that the product will stay fresh for a longer period of time.

About my rating system. I was at the Sandals White House Jamaica in 2010. Every morning we would wander over to the bakery an have a fresh cup of Blue Mountain Coffee with a warm croissant fresh out of the oven. We'd watch the sunrise with our hot cups of coffee, our pastry and our toes in the Carribean - that coffee is my 5. Anything I consider to be a good cup of coffee is a 3.

Major Dickason's - 4 out of 5 stars

We made a good decision to open the Major Dickason's on Saturday morning.  Our Saturdays are busy and active and this coffee is perfectly suited to a cup of coffee over a quick breakfast. The flavour is mild but not weak. There is no hint of bitterness and it is an ideal coffee for someone who likes their coffee black with no sugar.  Too much cream and sugar can over power this blend but a little cream and sugar or just a little cream is delicious. Some coffee's have a stronger flavor than needed and they can take away the taste of simple foods, not this one. It's even flavour went well with a bowl of cereal toast and orance juice.  There was minimal after taste which in my humble opinion is a sight of a clean roast.

Guatemala Atitlan Organic - 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Sunday morning we were rewarded with the fresh aroma out of the bag. It is a little different than the Major Dickason's. There was a hint of something other than coffee, nothing bad, but a slightly weaker aroma. The coffee is bolder than the Major Dickason's and is perfect for a Sunday morning. We paired the coffee with very sweet jam on toast and it was ideal. The strong flavour of the coffee has a nice bitterness more akin to dark chocolate than to coffee bitterness. It's not weakened by cream or sugar and they enhance the flavour. I found that drinking it black was very rewarding and it pairs nice with anything sweet.  I would serve this coffee with dessert in a moment but it might not be an ideal coffee for your traveller. All-in-all it was a very good coffee although I prefer a milder taste.
